LIT 292-IH2: Spring 2017 Topic Seminar, The Uncanny, Mikita Brottman, B330

In this course, using Sigmund Freud’s famous essay as a springboard, we will explore various manifestations of the Uncanny as it appears in fiction, aesthetics, literature, cinema, and critical theory, with particular attention to the inflection of the Uncanny in the literary arts. In an attempt to get to the root of the question posed by the Uncanny – how can something be both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time? – we will use psychoanalysis to get to the heart of phenomena that are marginal, liminal, obscure and threatening.
