Spring 2017 Topic Seminar HMST 240: Global Perspectives, Harry Mattison, Wednesday 9-11:45, B460
This course explores our contemporary world and world events, especially as they relate to the interests of humanists. Readings are primarily by authors, activists, and scholars outside the Euro-North American nexus. Its goal will be to bring students up to date on where human development and the progress of societies stand in the 21st century. This class will introduce students to non-western ways of looking at the contemporary world, present individuals and groups that are committed to social change from a variety of world cultures and address the work of artists who provide alternatives to a neo-liberal market driven agenda. In addition, it will consider the media through which so much of the world is represented and understood.
